-

Room 229, North Borden Building, 563 Spadina Crescent

Founded in 1972, Artists Space was one of the first "alternative" art spaces in New York City. Current director and curator Stefan Kalmár and curator Richard Birkett will give a talk on the organization's historical background, and how the space currently positions itself in a vastly altered cultural landscape.

Stefan Kalmár (*1970) has been Executive Director and Curator of Artists Space since 2009. Previously he has held positions as Director of Kunstverein München (2005-2009), Director of Institute of Visual Culture, Cambridge UK (2000-2005), and Curator of Cubitt Gallery, London (1996-1999).

Richard Birkett (*1976) has been Curator at Artists Space since 2010. Before moving to New York, he was curator at the ICA in London (2007-2010), and co-ran Whitechapel Project Space, London between 2002 and 2008.
