22.07.13 - Daniels students and alumnus chosen as finalists in Sukkahville 2013 design competition

Several Daniels students and an alumnus have been selected as finalists in the Sukkahville 2013 design competition. Sukkahville is an architecture competition that challenges designers to re-imagine the traditional Jewish Sukkah, a small, symbolic wilderness shelter that symbolizes the frailty and transience of life. Six teams from around the world were selected by a distinguished jury and invited to construct their proposals for the pop-up exhibition.

Of the six designs selected, two teams were comprised of Daniels architecture students. Jason van der Burg (M Arch Thesis), Jesse Hao (M Arch Thesis), Duncan Sabiston (M Arch Thesis), Dave Freedman (M Arch 2013) and David Whyte (M Arch 2) were selected for their project “Spiral Sukkah" (pictured above). Katrina Novak (M Arch 2) and Duc Tran (BFA, Concordia University, 2010) were selected for their proposal “Ombres Lumineuses” (pictured below).

All finalists will be awarded a building stipend to construct and publicly display their creative structures at Mel Lastman Square in Toronto from September 22nd until September 24th 2013. Live music and other festivities will also take place during the event.
