19.09.14 - Announcing the Daniels Faculty's 2014-2015 Public Lectures

The John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design is pleased to announce its public programming for 2014-15.

This year's public lectures cover the wide range of approaches taken by architects, landscape architects, urban designers, artists, scholars, and others who are asking important questions about, and tackling the significant challenges facing, our cities and landscapes. Each of our series will provide students, alumni, and members of the public with access and insight into the work of esteemed colleagues and visitors to the Faculty from around the globe.

The Daniels Faculty’s public programming is comprised of a variety of streams, including bulthaup lectures; Daniels Sessions; and the Building Ecology, Science and Technology (B.E.S.T.) Lecture series. The Daniels Fora series — lively discussions and debates that engage those in the design field and beyond  — also returns, with explorations into the architecture of the image and the changing conceptions of “home.”

Our public lectures kick off on September 23, with a bulthaup Lecture presented by Danish architect Ole Schrøder from TREDJE NATUR, the firm that designed “the world’s first climate-adapted neighborhood” in Copenhagen. On October 7, we’re pleased to present this year’s Michael Hough / Ontario Association of Landscape Architecture Visiting Critic, Cornelia Hahn Oberlander — a pioneer in the field of landscape architecture — in conversation with Susan Herrington, who recently released a book on Oberlander’s work.

Other esteemed speakers include Brazilian architect Carla Juaçaba, who will present this year’s Kohn Shnier Architects Lecture; Patricia Patkau of Patkau Architects in Vancouver, who will present this year’s George Baird Lecture; Daniels alumnus Jimenez Lai of the firm Bureau Spectacular, who is presenting a bulthaup Lecture; and the Daniels Faculty’s own Shane Williamson, whose firm Williamson Chong received an Emerging Voices Award and Emerging Architectural Practice award earlier this year.

bulthaup Lectures
For the past nine years, bulthaup has made it possible for the Daniels Faculty to host an ever-evolving exchange of ideas and new ways of thinking about architecture and design. This year’s bulthaup lectures present four forward-thinking speakers who are redefining practice in their field. Each lecture takes place on a Tuesday at 6:30pm in Room 103 at 230 College Street.

“bulthaup Toronto is proud to sponsor lectures at the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design," says Stefan Sybydlo, Principal of bulthaup Toronto. "bulthaup has a long relationship with design education dating back to its philosophical roots in the Bauhaus, and we continue to enjoy fostering opportunities for students and the community to hear some of the greatest speakers of our time.”

Daniels Sessions
Speakers in this series include those immersed in practice and/or research in architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, and visual studies — and those engaged in related work outside these traditional fields. Daniels Sessions take place in Room 103 at 230 College Street from 1:00 - 2:00pm. For the complete list of speakers, visit the Daniels Faculty website.

B.E.S.T. Lectures
The Building, Ecology, Science and Technology (B.E.S.T) lecture series focuses on specialized topics of interest to the design profession by inviting leading researchers and practitioners to share their perspectives on the emerging intersection between ecology, science and technology in the built environment. Each B.E.S.T. lecture qualifies for 2 hours of Ontario Association of Architects Structured Learning Credits. The lectures take place on Thursday evenings from 6:30-8:00pm in Room 103 and are followed by a reception. The B.E.S.T. lecture series is sponsored by Tremco Roofing and Building Maintenance. For a list of this year’s B.E.S.T. Lecture dates and speakers, please visit the Daniels Faculty’s website.
