20.04.15 - Vineetha Sivathasan, a third year MArch student, wins Pan Am Path art competition

Third year Masters of Architecture student, Vineetha Sivathasan, is part of a team of U of T students that won a competition to design an art installation along Toronto's new Pan Am Path. Sivathasan created the entry with partners Zee Bolad (BA 2015) and Zarish Asif (BA 2014, UTSC).

Fairgrounds is a kinetic sculpture "that mimics the nature of phenakistoscope in conveying an original narrative on inclusivity,” says Sivathasan. "We are working with the themes of active living, story telling and whimsicality that comes with an interactive sculpture."

The installation is one of many entries that was chosen to be installed along the Pan Am Path. The trail was initiated by Friends of the Pan Am Path, an independent, non-profit organization, that is working to "connect Toronto's extensive trail system, and support local communities along the route with arts and culture programming." The Path will piece together over 80km of existing trails across the city and "create truly vibrant public spaces."

Fairgrounds will be installed in the University of Toronto Scarborough zone of the Pan Am Path – adjacent to the Para Pan Am tennis facilities – later this summer, and will be on display until October.

“I’ve done site-specific installations before, but nothing to this scale,” Sivasathan told U of T News in March. “It has been a long journey, talking with engineers, lawyers, UTSC facilities personnel, programmers, Pan Am organizers and committees."

The official opening will be held on August 4th, 2015 to coincide with the opening of the Para Pan Am games.
