23.04.15 - Georges Farhat's book, André Le Nôtre in Perspective, wins the Philip Johnson Exhibition Catalogue Award

Associate Professor Georges Farhat’s book André Le Nôtre in Perspective has received the 2015 Philip Johnson Exhibition Catalogue Award from the Society of Architectural Historians (SAH). Farhat co-edited the book with Patricia Bouchenot-Déchin.

Writes SAH:

The Philip Johnson Award was established by the SAH to recognize and encourage excellence in publications of architectural history exhibitions, those that are able to address historical and critical questions in special ways, through the presentation of both documentation and artifacts to a diversified audience, so their catalogues have become distinctive vehicles for the expression of scholarship in architectural history. They remain as the substantial and enduring contribution after the life of the exhibition is spent. The Philip Johnson Award is one of the most prestigious awards of the society.

The book includes 35 refereed essays in both French and English from experts across a range of disciplines, including archeology, art, history, hydraulics, optics, and landscape architecture.

Known as one of the founders of the practice of landscape architecture, Le Nôtre designed the gardens of Versailles, Chantilly, the Tuileries and future Champs Elysées, as well as many other places in and around Paris and elsewhere in France and abroad (including garden design projects for England’s Greenwich Park, Italy’s Racconigi Park, and at Het Loo Palace in the Netherlands).

The SAH 2015 Philip Johnson Exhibition Catalogue Award follows on the heals of two other prominent awards recently received by Farhat and Bouchenot-Déchin for the book. Earlier this year, they were recognized with the the 2015 J. B. Jackson Prize, sponsored by the Foundation for Landscape Studies in New York City; and the 2014 René Pechère Prize from the René Pechère Library at the Centre International pour la Ville, l'Architecture et le Paysage in Brussels.
