Animal-Architecture-Ecosystem: Design towards Multi-species Recognition
ARC451H1 F1
Instructor: Claire Zimmerman
Meeting Section: L0102
Fall 2023
This course considers two crucial ingredients for creating a more sustainable multi-species architecture today: animal constructions and human projections. "Animal constructions" designates things animals build, but also how human animals build to protect, accommodate, contain, husband, or exploit other living creatures. "Human projections" are things we make that reveal how we understand other animals with our current linguistic and cognitive structures. This course interrogates both of these categories, seeking to push beyond them. We will read from architectural history, from theory, and from animal studies. Students will present regularly in class, and may produce a collaborative research project.
