This course considers various ways in which the identity of “place” is constructed in Toronto, utilizing the Toronto Biennial of Art as a case-study. ‘The Art of the Deal’ was a book authored by Tony Schwartz and credited to Donald Trump. What does “art” mean to us today? We now have curated music playlists, curated second-hand clothing shops, and curated exhibitions. What does it mean “to curate”? Some people call this place Canada, North America, or Turtle Island. What does “this place” mean? The course is offered as a series of seminars, with assigned readings, research papers and presentations by students.
