Summer 2022
August 1 - August 12
In the third iteration of the Design Build Studio, students will travel for two weeks to the Haliburton Forest Bone Lake Research Camp to design and build a small pavilion to accommodate a variety of uses. Students will work with members of the Forestry Faculty to build with local materials while engaged in multiple aspects of design, construction and forestry management.
The studio will be broken into two weeks of overlapping study: Design & Build. In the first days of the studio students will work as a group to establish a Team Code. The Code will outline the working methods and ethics that the team will work to during the length of the course.
Students will then begin the design process starting with the exploration of the site, program, materials and construction methods. Building is encouraged during the design process in the form of material exploration and 1:1 details. Construction of the pavilion will follow, utilizing the experience gained and plans laid during the design phase.
Free time will be scheduled to allow for the exploration of the forest facilities. Students will be offered cabin accommodations along with communal cooking facilities. Evening programing will include optional film screenings, team building and campfire discussion.
