Daniels Faculty Reviews Winter 2016

-

Daniels Faculty | 230 College Street

Alumni, design professionals, and members of the public are welcome to join us for final reviews. Daniels Faculty graduate students in architecture, landscape, and urban design will present their final projects to their instructors, as well as guest critics from the professional community and local and international academic institutions. The student presentations are part of their final exam requirements and they will be graded on their work.

If you are an alumnus or alumna planning to attend reviews, we would like to welcome you personally and make some introductions. Alumni are encouraged to email John Cowling at John.Cowling@daniels.utoronto.ca.

Follow UofTDaniels on Twitter and Instagram and join the conversation using the hashtag #DanielsReviews. And, check out daily photo albums on our Facebook page!

All reviews take place from 9 AM to 6 PM (unless otherwise stated).

Research Studios: ARC3016

Meta Studio 3.0: "It's Only a Model"
Students created individual 'proto-theses' projects through writing, historical research, precedent studies, discussion, the making of drawings and artifacts, the crafting of scripts and scenarios, and the assembly of images, ideas and evidence into two format-works: a box and a film. View the full course outline.

The Ecstacy of Piranesi: Drawing as Thesis
Drawing has always been the activity that, perhaps more than any other, defined the practice of architecture. In this research studio, students created a space of critical imagination in an attempt to become authorities on the act of drawing. The aim of the studio was for students to develop confidence towards undertaking a thesis where the drawing is the thesis. View the full course outline.

Component Building II
Opposing both relegation to the architectural surface and the conception of architecture as isolated artifact, this studio turns attention to architecture’s internal systems – the functioning organs of the architectural body. View the full course outline.

Location: Room 066 North

Guest critics:

Elizabeth Paden
Ultan Byrne

Maria Denegri

Open Form / Überbia
There are essentially two opposing approaches to making urban architecture: those that look to the city to understand what kind of architecture to make, and those that look to architecture to learn what to make for the city. In this research studio, students were challenged to do both as urban-minded architects.

DAVENPORT: ir-regular terrain
The history of colonial settlement in Canada has been characterized by three aggressive acts of transformation of the land as found: overlaying a regular settlement grid, clearing the land of its indigenous landscape vegetation, and leveling topographic irregularities that interfered with continuity of the grid. This studio examines a remnant urban terrain of irregularity: Davenport Road. View the full course outline.
