Ground Magazine, the quarterly publication of the Ontario Association of Landscape Architects, invites you to attend a panel discussion on the future of landscape architecture. We have gathered a panel of young and experienced professionals and educators to ask and answer the questions surrounding the future of the profession, including:
Adrienne Hall, Artist and Designer
Adrienne Hall is an artist and designer working between the fields of art, spatial research, and landscape architecture. She received her Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from the University of Guelph and will be entering the Interdisciplinary Master of Fine Arts program at the University of Pennsylvania this Fall. She works on various public and private works of landscape architecture in Toronto at NAK Design Strategies.
Alex Josephson, Cofounder of PARTISANS
Alex Josephson cofounded PARTISANS in 2012 after studying architecture at the University of Waterloo, the University of Rome, and the Architectural Association School of Architecture (AA). PARTISANS is an intrepid practice comprised of architects, artists, thinkers, and cultural enthusiasts whose work across all scales is rooted in deliberate acts of craftsmanship and storytelling. The studio’s projects have been featured in international publications, such as Wallpaper, Dezeen, Frame, and designboom, won numerous awards, including the R+D Award, Canadian Interiors' Best of Canada Award and 2015 Project of the Year, and the Ontario Association of Architects’ Best Emerging Practice and Design Excellence awards, and shortlisted by MCHAP and the World Architecture Festival. The only Canadian to have ever received the New York Prize Fellowship at the Van Alen Institute, Alex was recently named Best Emerging Designer by Canada’s Design Exchange. He currently lectures at the University of Toronto’s Daniels Faculty of Architecture.
Nina-Marie Lister, Graduate Programme Director and Associate Professor, Ryerson University School of Urban + Regional Planning, and Principal of Plandform
Nina-Marie Lister is Associate Professor of Urban + Regional Planning at Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada. From 2009-2013 she was Visiting Professor in Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning at Harvard University, Graduate School of Design, and in 2014, Visiting Professor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Toronto.
A Registered Professional Planner (MCIP, RPP) with a background in resource management, ecology and environmental planning, Lister is the founding principal of plandform, a creative studio practice exploring the relationship between landscape, ecology, and urbanism. Her research, teaching and practice focus on the confluence of landscape infrastructure and ecological processes within contemporary metropolitan regions. Through this, she has developed three streams of applied research and design: adaptive ecological design for ecosystem complexity and biodiversity conservation; parklands and waterfronts in post-industrial landscapes; and urban food systems and productive/edible landscapes.
Alissa North, OALA, Director the Master of Landscape Architecture program at the University of Toronto, Associate Professor, and Founding Partner of NDO
Alissa North is the Director of the Master of Landscape Architecture Program at Daniels, where she is an Associate Professor. A Founding Partner of the Toronto landscape architecture practice North Design Office Inc., she is committed to designing urban environments to engender vibrant communities and ecologies.
Cecelia Paine, FCSLA, FASLA, OALA, Professor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Guelph
Cecelia Paine is a professor of landscape architecture at the University of Guelph where she currently teaches community design and professional practice. She recently completed an 8-year term as Associate Dean of Graduate Studies for the University. Her research interests include heritage landscape conservation, design for walkability and contemporary Canadian design practice. Prior to joining the University, she practised in Ottawa for almost two decades where her firm focused on heritage conservation, urban parks and open space planning.
Cecelia is the recipient of numerous professional awards for design, planning, research and communication. Notable projects include design of Sparks Street Mall, restoration of McKenzie King Estate, and serving as advisor for conservation of Parque del Este in Caracas, Venezuela, designed by renowned landscape architect, Roberto Burle Marx.
Active in professional bodies, Cecelia has served as president of the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects and the Ontario Association of Landscape Architects, was the founding editor of Canada’s professional magazine, Landscapes Paysages, and is immediate past-president of the Landscape Architecture Canada Foundation. She is a Fellow of both the Canadian and American Society of Landscape Architects.
The evening will begin with introductions and some key disussion questions with our panelists. The final half hour will be reserved for questions from the audience. The discussion will be moderated by Ground Magazine Editorial Board member Kate Nelischer.
The Ground Magazine Round Table is typically the heart of each issue, and we use it as a forum for broad ideas, insights, and anecdotes. Usually the Round Table discussions are held privately, but this time we’re creating a public event in partnership with the University of Toronto John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design, allowing for audience participation.
Many thanks to the Ontario Association of Landscape Architects and the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design for making this event possible.
