Old buildings are graceful, functional and downright cool. So how do architects go about transforming an older building into the newest urban hot spot?  We'll discuss the various approaches for heritage conservation, including the process and primary considerations for understanding and transforming older buildings. A few case studies will illustrate the simplest repairs, more extensive treatments, and new research that is helping old buildings perform as well or better than new construction.

Sarah Gray is a Project Principal and Building Sciences Leader at WSP, a multi-discipline engineering and consulting firm. Her work ranges from heritage buildings to new construction, and includes condominiums, commercial ofÿces and institutional buildings. Sarah has a Bachelor’s degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Cincinnati, and a Master’s degree in Historic Preservation from the University of Pennsylvania. Sarah is a licensed Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario and a professional member of the Canadian Association of Heritage Professionals.
