The challenge of building low carbon resilient communities, whether new or retrofitted, to meet urgent climate change targets requires thoughtful design and sensitive planning to maintain community character and quality of life, and better ways of engaging the public. We need public support if we are to transform our neighbourhoods and lifestyles. This talk reviews various visualization tools and participatory processes adapted from planning/design media, which have proven effective in reaching and motivating citizens on climate change solutions, in research by UBC's Collaborative for Advanced Landscape Planning and partners.
Stephen Sheppard, PhD., ASLA, is a Professor in Forest Resources Management at the University of British Columbia, teaching in landscape and climate change planning, community engagement, and visualization. He served as Director of UBC’s Bachelor of Urban Forestry program and directs the Collaborative for Advanced Landscape Planning (CALP), an interdisciplinary research group which works with communities on developing climate change solutions. He has over 30 years of experience in environmental assessment, aesthetics, landscape planning and public involvement. He has published four books, including Visualizing Climate Change from Earthscan/Routledge. His research interests include sea-level rise planning, energy effects of urban forests, social mobilization for low-carbon resilient communities, and videogames as an engagement tool on climate change.
