Future City Builders
The theme of Doors Open 2019, "20 Something!", focuses on Doors Open’s history and future.  This year’s event will be a celebration of the first 20 years and next 20 years of this popular public event.

As part of that celebration, Doors Open is looking to the millennials (age 22-37) who will lead the process of envisioning Toronto's architecture, design and urban planning infrastructure.  It is the "20 somethings" who will champion a vision of the urban landscape and city building in 2039.

As part of the Daniels Faculty’s programming during Doors Open, our students— millennials who are enrolled in architecture, landscape architecture, urban design and visual studies — will lead new interactive workshops for children and their parents on city building. These interactive workshops are designed for all students aged 7-11 years old (grades 2-6) with an interest in science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM). Children should be accompanied by their parents.

Workshops will be first-come first-serve and will be held at 10am and 2pm daily, in Room 330.

Daniels Faculty in in partnership with the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival  

In our Student Commons on our ground floor and on our building’s north-facing glass facade, we have two installations of the work of the photographer Susan Dobson, together entitled Back/Fill. The project raises questions about the cyclical nature of the built environment’s material character, with its phases of demolition, construction, preservation, and renovation.

 

In the Larry Wayne Richards Gallery, we have an installation by Geoffrey James, Toronto’s First Photo Laureate. Working Spaces | Civic Settings: Jože Plečnik in Ljubljana explores the little-known but truly extraordinary architectural works and urban infrastructural projects designed by the unorthodox Slovenian architect Plečnik, in his transformation of the city of Ljubljana over a period of almost three decades.

Resilient TO Exhibition
 

The Resilient TO exhibition supports the launch of the City of Toronto's first Resilience Strategy, a vision to help Toronto survive, adapt, and thrive in the face of any challenge — particularly climate change and growing inequities.

Currated by Fadi Masoud (MLA 2010), Assistant Professor of Landscape Architecture and Urbanism, with Lead Designer, Sessional Lecturer Emilia Hurd (MLA 2014), the exhibition and launch of the Resilience Strategy is a celebration of Toronto's resilience and the Strategy's initiation.

Located in the First Floor Heritage Hallway, the exhibition reflects the Resilience Strategy's three focus areas — Resilient People and Neighbourhoods, Resilient Design and Infrastructure, and Leading a Resilient City — and traces political, cultural, and physical manifestations of resilience, design, and infrastructure across Toronto. A particular focus is given to contemporary resilient design and urbanism work, with precedents from around the world.

The exhibition features the work of students and faculty from across Daniels as well as the University of Toronto's School of Cities network.

The Public Art of Rafael Lozano‑Hemmer

Rafael Lozano-Hemmer is one of the most acclaimed artists working in public space, but his pieces wouldn’t exist without participation. Shot over 10 years in 17 countries, MEGALODEMOCRAT follows Rafael’s breakout career creating large-scale works that entice an increasingly isolated public into transforming their cities and reconnecting with one another.

Director Benjamin Duffield will be on-site on Saturday, May 25, to introduce the film. A brief Q&A will follow.

The Analytical Atlas of Toronto (2nd Floor Hallway)
A composite view of the city that is both individual and collective, the Analytical Atlas of Toronto is comprised of 2km x 2km sections of the city. Toronto's physical form, and its relationship to infrastructural and natural systems, aspects of the built environment (such as highways, parks and open spaces), zoning classifications, and housing typologies are examined.

Toronto Future Tense (Room 230)
Graduate student projects - from first year studios to thesis - looking at various sites within the GTA and how these might be transformed, through new architectural forms, new urban priorities, and new development strategies.

Campus Guide Pop-Up Sale (East Door)
Staff from the UofT Bookstore will be selling copies of the new edition of The Campus Guide: University of Toronto (written by Larry Wayne Richards, Professor Emeritus and former dean of the John H. Daniels Faculty Of Architecture, Landscape, and Design) near the eastern door. 

Film Set (Room 200)
The 'Secret Society of Second Born Royals' is currently being filmed at One Spadina . This space is one of the sets. The movie is premiering on Disney+ (a streaming service) and is produced by Maple Plus Productions Inc. Staff from the production will be on hand to answer questions.

Historical Archival Information (Room 300)
Visit Room 300 to view a variety of photographs and documents related to the long and storied history of One Spadina.

About the Daniels Building

Designed by Nader Tehrani and Katherine Faulkner, principals of the acclaimed firm NADAAA — in collaboration with Architect-of-record Adamson & Associates, landscape architects Public Work, and heritage architects ERA — the Daniels Building at the University of Toronto includes dynamic, flexible learning and research environments for faculty and students of architecture and design.
 
A merging of 19th and 21st century architecture, the history of the Daniels Building parallels the history of the city itself. The original neo-Gothic style building was the first home of Knox College, a Presbyterian theological school. The building later served as a military hospital, the home of Connaught Laboratories, and, later, a U of T auxiliary and servicing facility.
 
To create the new home of the Daniels Faculty, the historic building was pared back to its roots, restoring original details. A three-story contemporary addition integrates the Faculty’s more active, creative spaces, iconically represented by the design studio, with its soaring bow tie truss ceiling and clerestory windows. The Principal Hall surprises and delights with fins and stripes in charged colours, creating a dynamic environment for large lectures and events.
