Please join us for a book launch of Border Cultures, published by the Art Gallery of Windsor (AGW) in partnership with Black Dog Publishing and edited by Srimoyee Mitra, Curator of Contemporary Art, Art Gallery of Windsor.
This event is the culmination of the fall 2015 MVS Proseminar speakers series and will be followed by a talk by Srimoyee Mitra, curator for the 3 part exhibition that is covered in Border Cultures.
In Border Cultures, 7 authors and 45 artists examine borders as complex sites of encounter and difference. Here borderlands are liminal spaces where new subjectivities and identities can emerge and resist the colonial paradigm, while activating vernacular aesthetics within international contemporary art discourse. The aim of the publication and exhibition projects is to strengthen and broaden today’s movement toward social justice and de-colonial methodologies within museums and galleries.
The publication includes contributions by Dr. Iftikhar Dadi, Dr. Michael Darroch, Bonnie Devine, Mariam Ghani, Christopher McNamara, Dr. Dylan Miner and Dr. Lee Rodney.
AGW is indebted to TD Bank Group for their multi-year commitment to the project and gratefully acknowledge the ongoing support of Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council, Trillium Foundation and the City of Windsor.
In 2013, Srimoyee Mitra launched a three-part exhibition, Border Cultures, that explored what it means to be a border city in the 21st Century. Taking place between 2013-2015, the exhibition examined the role and relevance of a public art gallery in such a context with an emphasis on fostering inclusive spaces and aesthetics where marginalized subjectivities and experiences can resonate with audiences and broaden established narratives in Canadian and international contemporary art.
Srimoyee Mitra is the Curator of Contemporary Art at the Art Gallery of Windsor. She has edited a multi-authored book co-published by Black Dog Publishers on Border Cultures. She has been published in various art journals including C Magazine, Fuse Magazine, Border Crossings, Scapegoat Journal. Her exhibition and publications program in Windsor has received five awards by the Ontario Association of Art Galleries between 2013- 2015.
