15.02.12 - CBC's Metro Morning interviews faculty and alumni about Tower Renewal
Today, CBC's Metro Morning broadcast live from a residential tower on Kipling Avenue in Toronto's Rexdale neighbourhood. Host Matt Galloway spoke to residents who live in the aging concrete towers along the "Kipling strip," as well as property managers, architects, planners, and community workers, about the challenges and triumphs of life in one of Toronto's many concrete highrises.
This special broadcast highlighted the work of Toronto's Tower Renewal program, an initiative that grew out of research that took place at the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design.
Daniels alumnus Graeme Stewart, who is now an associate with ERA Architects — and whose international research and design work was instrumental in founding the Tower Renewal Project — was featured on today's program. A link to a podcast of his interview can be found on Metro Morning's website (click on "Part 2").
Yesterday, Associate Professor Ted Kesik, one of the co-authors of the Tower Renewal Guidelines, was interviewed in a segment produced for Metro Morning by Mary Wiens. Kesik spoke about the life cycle of Toronto's many highrise residential towers. A link to a podcast of his interview — along with images that show how overcladding systems could revitalize these aging towers — can be found here.
The ideas behind the Tower Renewal program grew out of studies that Stewart did at the Daniels Faculty as both an undergraduate and graduate student. Academic Advisors included Adrian Blackwell, Paul Hess, David Hulchanski, Ted Kesik, David Lieberman, Ivan Salef, Paolo Scrivano, and Kevin Weiss.
