02.11.15 - Daniels Alumni Relaunch Installation That Speaks 'The Language of Plants'

Daniels alumni Jasmeen Bains (MLA 2013) and Yi Zhou (MLA 2013), cofounders of Studio for Landscape Culture, are relaunching their installation The Language of Plants this week at the Beneficial Biodiversity Symposium.

Within the context of the black oak savannah, The Language of Plants reveals the subsonic dialogue between plants and their surrounding ecosystems. These "voices" (i.e. the sounds that all plants produce as they undergo physiological processes) vary depending on physiological conditions such as anatomy, habitat, and season. The installation creates an auditory experience that emphasizes the nuances of these sounds.

Studio for Landscape Culture is a research-based practice focused on the connection between culture and ecology in the medium of the landscape. Their work centres on the memory and creation of resilient ecologies in the urban realm.

Bains and Zhou initially created this installation last spring for the Gladstone Grow Op where it was named runner up for the Jury Award.

The Beneficial Biodiversity Symposium will be held at the Toronto Botanical Gardens on November 6.
