28.03.25 - Daniels Design Discovery returns this summer for high school students interested in architecture
High school students with a passion for design have the opportunity to explore the world of architecture this summer through Daniels Design Discovery.
Hosted by the Daniels Faculty at the University of Toronto, this program is designed for students aged 14-18 and offers a hands-on introduction to the field of architecture, providing them with the essential skills and knowledge needed to take their creative ideas to the next level.
The program offers two distinct courses: Drawing Practices and Model Making. Both courses are designed to immerse students in the architectural process, giving them the tools to communicate their ideas visually and physically. Each two-week course focuses on different aspects of design, allowing students to explore their interests and build a strong foundation in architectural representation.
The Drawing Practices course is ideal for students who want to expand their drawing skills and communicate design ideas clearly. Throughout the two weeks, participants will focus on a specific site, learning the principles of site analysis and understanding how environments, stories, and systems shape a place. Using architectural tools like 3D design software, photography, and traditional drawing techniques, students will refine their skills and learn how to translate their ideas into compelling visual representations. This course will provide students with valuable techniques that can be used in any creative field, from architecture to graphic design.
In the Model Making course, students will explore how to bring their design ideas to life by creating physical models. Over the two-week course, participants will learn to translate abstract concepts into tangible 3D objects. This course emphasizes design, drawing, and communication skills while allowing students to experiment with materials and techniques. Students will learn to create models that respond to the complexities of a site and reflect their unique design visions, all while gaining an understanding of how architects communicate their ideas through physical models.

Both courses are taught by experienced instructors who are experts in their fields. The instructors provide valuable guidance throughout the program, helping students develop critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills. With a focus on hands-on learning, students will gain practical experience in architectural representation and problem-solving, making this program an ideal introduction to the world of architecture.
The Daniels Design Discovery Program is not just about learning technical skills—it’s about sparking curiosity, encouraging innovation, and building a strong foundation for students interested in pursuing architecture or related fields. By the end of the summer program, students will have developed their creative abilities, built confidence in their design skills, and gained a deeper understanding of what it takes to be an architect.
