09.04.07 - Kelly Doran (MArch 3) awarded 2007 Cohos Evamy Scholarship

Cohos Evamy integratedesignTM and the Michael Evamy Board of Trustees are pleased to announce that Kelly Nelson Doran has been awarded the 2007 Cohos Evamy Scholarship in honour of Michael Evamy. Kelly Doran (MArch 3), is receiving the award based on his impressive submission entitled "Company Towns: The Corporate Colonization of the Mackenzie River Basin."

In the submission, Kelly presents the proposition that,

"Western Canada’s exploration, creation and development is and has been dependant upon the Colonial actions of corporate interests."

His study will examine the phenomena of ‘Company Towns’ in direct relation to the current development of the Mackenzie River Basin. Upon completion of his research Mr. Doran will prepare a summary of his findings for public presentation. Scheduled lectures are anticipated to take place starting Spring 2008.

This year’s selection committee was greatly impressed by the quality of the submissions and the strength of the ideas. The proposals ranged from exploring how architectural fantasies influence the built environment through to the role architecture plays in creating and supporting a civil society. Scholarship manager, Donna Clare, indicated that given the strength of the submissions, the committee had difficulty selecting a single recipient.

"Kelly Doran was ultimately selected as the recipient of the 2007 scholarship because of the importance of the idea and his passion for understanding how current development has and future development will impact the far North; one of Canada’s most powerful and ecologically sensitive environments."

Awarded annually since 1999, the national Cohos Evamy Scholarship programme in Honour of Michael Evamy is in its ninth successful year. Established in memory of Michael Evamy, a founding partner instrumental in building Cohos Evamy’s practice from 1966 to 1993, the award provides financial assistance to a Canadian student attending a Canadian School of Architecture in the year prior to his/her final year of study. The scholarship allows the recipient to undertake a research project based on a field of study of personal interest. The intent of the research is to enrich and advance the recipient’s personal and professional experience and knowledge on a topic relevant to the practice of Architecture. The value of the award in 2007 is $5000.00 plus a secondary amount of $3000.00 for project related expenses during the course of investigation.
