06.07.15 - Master of Visual Studies student Daniel Joyce chronicles his cross-country road trip of Canadian art galleries for Canadian Art magazine

Before starting the Daniels Faculty's Master of Visual Studies program last fall, Daniel Joyce was Artistic Director of the Khyber Centre for the Arts in Halifax. To acknowledge his impact on the area's arts scene, the Hermes Gallery hosted a farewell exhibition titled Bon voyage, Daniel Joyce in 2014. According to The Coast newspaper, Joyce “made a deep and lasting impact on this city's cultural landscape.”

This summer, Joyce is contributing to our understanding of Canada's cultural landscape. For his internship credit for the MVS program, the studio art student is traveling across Canada to visit artist-run centres and art centres from Toronto to the West Coast. Joyce's reports on the artists and galleries will be published throughout the summer by Canadian Art magazine.

“Although I’m tempted to call the series of dispatches I will be writing along the way a ‘regional survey,’ the limited time I can spend in each community means that my coverage will be highly subjective—it would be unfair to consider this a comprehensive overview,” writes Joyce. “Instead, these articles will offer a condensed journal of this journey, and an opportunity to recognize a few of the dedicated artists and organizers who advance the arts in these locations.”

For his first post, Joyce wrote about the White Water Gallery in North Bay, La Galerie du Nouvel-Ontario in Sudbury, and Definitely Superior Art Gallery in Thunder Bay.
