05.10.15 - Join Sustainable Canada Dialogues for the launch of Acting on Climate Change: Extending the Dialogue Among Canadians, October 8
On Thursday, October 8 Sustainable Canada Dialogues (SCD) — a group of over 60 researchers from across Canada — will launch Acting on Climate Change: Extending the Dialogue Among Canadians. This new collection of texts builds on the national climate change action plan released by the SCD scholars this past March by inviting responses from First Nations leaders, businesses, NGOs, labour groups, youth, and private citizens.
Assistant Professor Liat Margolis is a member of SCD's research team and the Daniels Faculty is one of the sponsors of the launch event.
Launch of Acting on Climate Change: Extending the Dialogue Among Canadians
Thursday, October 8
10:00am - 1:30pm
Hart House Music Room
7 Hart House Circle, University of Toronto
The Chair of SCD, Catherine Potvin, a professor of Biology at McGill, hopes "that Acting on Climate Change: Extending the Dialogue Among Canadians, will provide the seed for an inclusive, country-wide consultation on the best ways for Canada to transition toward a low-carbon, sustainable economy and society.”
In total, 28 contributors responded to the scholars request for feedback to their plan. The depth and breadth of responses included in the report highlights the collective will among Canadians to act on climate change. The new publication includes: 1) legitimate Indigenous Peoples’ voices, 2) deepened discussion on energy, and 3) broadened dialogue on topics such as finance and investment, labour transition, social acceptability and the future visions of different groups of Canadians.
The October 8th launch of Extending the Dialogue Among Canadians will include a brief introduction to Sustainable Canada Dialogues, a panel discussion on First Nations, Energy, Labour and Climate Policy, and a “call to action” from youth representatives.
The event will conclude with a “Solutions Fair” beginning at 11:35 AM which will include, amongst other things, an analysis of Federal parties’ platforms and opportunities for interviews and photos with representatives from SCD's scientific committee as well as those who contributed to the new publication.
