20.09.12 - Elise Shelley's recycled tire garden opens at Evergreen Brickworks
"On the Riverbank," a project sponsored by the Ontario Tire Stewardship, uses recycled tire products to create an abstracted riverine landscape that provides seating, play space and picnic areas for the the farmer's market at Evergreen Brickworks. The project was developed by Assistant Professor and Landscape Architect Elise Shelley and was based on the winning concept from the OTS/OALA student design competition by Jessica Gafic and first year Master of Architecture student Gloria Perez. The site mimics the curves and colours of Mud Creek, a tributary of the Don River running beneath.
Last Fall, Ontario Tire Stewardship, with the support of Ontario Association of Landscape Architects (OALA), challenged design students from across Ontario to use products made from recycled tires for a new ecological landscape feature to be incorporated into the green space at Toronto's Evergreen Brick Works. Finalists presented their proposals to a panel of judges in a "Dragons' Den" format at a Gala hosted at the Evergreen Brick Works on January 9, 2012. The students designs were developed in response to a strict set of real life design parameters such as site dimensions, available tire-derived products and budget restrictions.
Elise Shelley is a member of the Steering Committee of the Ontario Association of Landscape Architects. The river-themed design was officially opened to the public at Evergreen Brick Works on September 13 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
