03.07.12 - "Kampground, America" by Daniels alumus Martin Hogue published in Places

Places recently published a slideshow by Daniels alumnus Martin Hogue (MLA, 2010). Entitled "Kampground, America," the images form a visual survey of all KOA (Kampgrounds of America) campgrounds in the United States, from the Badlands to the Las Vegas Strip. KAO celebrates its 50th anniversary this summer.

Writes Hogue: "From a single campground in Billings, Montana, in 1962, KOA grew to an empire of 900 franchises across North America by the end of the 1970s. The company modeled its operations on national motel chains such as Holiday Inn, providing an extensive network of facilities, easy highway access and a consistent menu of services. Today’s amenities include swimming pools, prepared foods, dog runs, mini putts, laundry rooms, wi-fi and even cable television. "

Hogue's slideshow follows an article he wrote last spring entitled "A Short History of the Campsite." This piece explored the "complex internal geography of the American campground."

Hogue is the William Munsey Kennedy Jr. Fellow in the Department of Landscape Architecture in the College of Environmental Forestry at the State University of New York, Syracuse. He is currently working on an exhibit of drawings titled One Site or Another: Packaging the Camping Experience in America.
