09.04.08 - Daniel Rabin (MArch 3) awarded 2008 Cohos Evamy Scholarship

Cohos Evamy integratedesignTM and the Michael Evamy Board of Trustees are pleased to announce that Daniel Rabin (MArch 3) has been awarded the 2008 Cohos Evamy Scholarship in honor of Michael Evamy. Daniel Rabin is receiving the award based on his impressive submission entitled “University of the Future: The Global Campus at the 21st Century.”

In the submission, Daniel presents the proposition that

“Canada’s student population is expected to increase by 25 percent over the coming decade … The current educational infrastructure in Canada is unable to meet this demand and plans have been put forth to initiate a rapid expansion of Canada’s 65 university campuses.”

Daniel’s study will examine the phenomena that are shaping and challenging the traditional form of the campus and will speculate that Canada could be a laboratory for new ideas in campus architecture.  Daniel argues that “the rise of a global society has demanded an entirely new typology of university and campus, one that transcends its protective borders in favour of a globally distributed logic.”  By closely examining examples of Canada’s post-war campuses and international franchises in Qatar and the U.A.E, Daniel will form a concrete thesis, speculating on new forms and ideas for the new Canadian and global campus.

Upon completion of his research Daniel will prepare a summary of his findings for public presentation. Scheduled lectures are anticipated to take place in the spring of 2009.

This year’s selection committee was greatly impressed by the quality of the submissions and the strength of the ideas. The proposals ranged from Sonic Aquarium, an installation piece exploring new strategies in representation of space with sound mapping and projection to a study of the material culture of wood construction in Canada.  Scholarship manager, Donna Clare, indicated that given the strength of the submissions, the committee had difficulty selecting a single recipient: “Each year our jury is faced with a daunting task, selecting a single recipient.  This year we received 18 submissions, all intriguing ideas worthy of support.  We encourage all the students to follow their passion.  Their strength and enthusiasm bode well for the future of our profession and our communities.”

Awarded annually since 1999, the Cohos Evamy Scholarship programme in Honour of Michael Evamy is in its ninth successful year. Established in memory of Michael Evamy, a founding partner instrumental in building Cohos Evamy’s practice from 1966 to 1993, the award provides financial assistance to a Canadian student attending a Canadian School of Architecture in the year prior to his/her final year of study. The scholarship allows the recipient to undertake a research project based on a field of study of personal interest. The intent of the research is to enrich and advance the recipient’s personal and professional experience and knowledge on a topic relevant to the practice of Architecture. The value of the award in 2008 is $5000.00 plus a secondary amount of $3000.00 for project related expenses during the course of investigation.
