21.10.15 - Lateral Office 'Makes Camp' at Chicago Architecture Biennial
This month, Lateral Office, founded by Associate Professor Mason White, was selected to participate in the inaugural Chicago Architecture Biennial.
Among the 100 participants, Lateral Office was the only Canadian firm selected for the first-ever Biennial of Architecture in North America.
The research and design-based project, which also involved Daniels students Safoura Zahedi (MArch, fourth year) and Kinan Hewitt (MArch, second year), focused on recreational camping. The team looked at how architecture could generate a new approach to campsite design and created prototypes with the support of the Daniels digital fabrication lab, assisted by Johnny Bui, Deagan McDonald and Paul Kozak.
The resulting project, Making Camp, is comprised of a series of five installations, each with its own response to a different type of terrain. Installed at the Chicago Cultural Center, it opened to the public early this month and has been receiving positive attention from the media and visitors to the exhibition.
Metropolis magazine named Making Camp among its “10 Highlights from the Chicago Architecture Biennial.” The project was also featured in The Architect’s Newspaper and Azure.
The Chicago Architecture Biennial is on view until January 3, 2016.
