As urbanization, climate change, inequity, corruption and other systemic dysfunctions are increasing in the Global South, so is the likelihood of major crises taking place in particularly vulnerable human settlements. From security threats to global pandemics and natural disasters, with every new crisis developing countries are facing increasing pressure on their socio-economic and political structures, emphasizing the weakness of their infrastructure and ultimately their incapacity to face major crises. This course will introduce students to crisis management theory and practice in cities of the global south. Building on the theory of urban development planning and risk/crisis management, it is aiming at providing students with fundamental knowledge on crisis management and resilience building in cities, while using the Global South as an empirical backdrop. Through lectures, readings, discussions, and case studies review, this course will be an opportunity for students to acquire the theoretical tools allowing them to engage in a critical analysis of topical crises affecting the developing world.
