Graduate Course Exemptions

Deadline to submit course exemption requests for new Master of Architecture students is June 2, 2025.

With the approval of the graduate unit, a student may be exempt from a specific course requirement permitting the substitution of another course to meet degree requirements. If granted, the overall course credit requirements for the degree are not reduced. Students must submit all course exemption requests for the entirety of their program before their registration for Year 1.

Multiple course exemption requests submitted together or incomplete submissions will not be considered. Please refer to the Master of Architecture (MARC) curriculum and degree diagram.

Course exemptions are granted only upon approval of the course instructor and the program director and are not guaranteed. Signatures from course instructors or the program director are not to be obtained by students. The Office of the Registrar and Student Services will process the request.

When a request is submitted, the Daniels Faculty will assess courses obtained at a post-secondary institution where a degree program has been completed for potential course exemptions. Acceptance of course exemptions by the Daniels Faculty shall be based on the recognition that, while learning experiences may differ in a variety of ways, their substance may be virtually equivalent in terms of their content and rigour. Some courses, however, are considered paired with one another or with the studio curriculum.

You must have achieved a grade of 'B' or higher in all of the courses listed for exemption to be considered. Each course exemption granted has a certain number of Full Course Equivalents (FCE) that must be replaced with electives totaling the same number of FCEs. Course exemptions have no credit weight.

The following documentation is required in order for your previous credits to be assessed for course exemption:

  • One Daniels Faculty course exemption request form per course request;
  • Pay $30 fee: this is a one time processing fee for your course exemption requests
  • Course description as listed in the university calendar;
  • Course outline(s) distributed by the professor(s) in class;
  • Copies of assignments (essays, tests, etc.) completed in the course (if applicable);
  • Visual documentation of projects completed in the case of design and representation courses (if applicable);
  • A complete copy of the official academic transcript showing grades of courses taken.

Each course exemption request must be submitted as a single PDF document via e-mail to graduate@daniels.utoronto.ca using the subject line “Course Exemption Request - {course code}”.

Please note that exemptions are not guaranteed. Content of previously granted exemptions may no longer be sufficient as curriculum and course enhancements are made. We therefore may not consider exemption for all courses. Course exemptions for courses granted previously are reconsidered each year and are therefore subject to change from previous years.
