Design Studio 4 – ARC314

This studio draws upon the knowledge and practice that has been acquired in previous representation and studio courses and seeks to consolidate conceptual and technical skills. Through the comprehensive design of a complex building, students are given the opportunity to understand architecture as the culmination of their response to a site, a conceptual framework, a spatial/ programmatic strategy, and a synthesis of systems and complex circulation requirements. The term project is a community & athletic center located near Corktown Common in Toronto. The pool, gymnasium, community space, and supplementary program combine spaces of performance and spectacle with spaces for the social life of a specific community. Consideration of the building’s connection to the immediate site and to the city as a whole are crucial to the successful creation of this new community space.
