This semester-long project explores the adaptive re-use and transformation of Honest Ed’s, a discount store located in Mirvish Village, into an Asylum Seekers Center. To come to Canada, refugees can take three different routes. About 7,000 refugees per year are sponsored by the Canadian government. However, in 2016 an influx of Syrian refugees could result in an additional 25,000 or more arrivals in the coming years. Another 3,000 refugees per year are sponsored by private groups such as churches. The largest group, which accounts for more than 15,000 people per year, arrive as refugee claimants and file for asylum once they are in Canada. Interestingly, there is no infrastructure in place to assist and support refugee claimants. They often become homeless and live on the streets without resources. Many are forced to look for help in city shelters, which are not equipped to meet their needs. The Asylum Seekers Center will provide temporary housing and services for refugee claimants while also welcoming other refugee groups, mainly through its key programs, which include a marketplace and cooking activities.
