Ornamental Structure

This projects aims to overcome the divide between ornament and structure by designing an ‘ornamental structure’– where the ornament performs and becomes the edifice. This endeavour hopes to produce a style of ornament that is not simply embellishment, but something that is integral to form. Could it be that the more the ornaments, the more structural the structure becomes? This project hopes to achieve maximal articulation of the surface and to have the ornament entirely fused with the structure.

Developed in two phases, this project focuses on the process of algorithmic generation of the ornament and the methodologies of designing a sacred space - a Cathedral - through subtraction.

I would like to extend my gratitude to my advisors Prof. Brady Peters at UofT and Prof. Benjamin Dillenburger, Prof. Fabio Gramazio, Prof. Matthias Kohler and David Jenny at the ETH Zürich for their enthusiasm and ceaseless support throughout this research.
