Megadatacenter

"Megadatacenter" questions the ownership and role of two privatized hidden infrastructures which use Lake Ontario to create capital: data and ice cold deep water cooling infrastructures. Today, far (5 kilometers) and deep (83 meters) from the redeveloped water front, ice cold water pumped from Lake Ontario is being used to cool down the towers of the down town core. In a building at 151 Front Street, data is collected and distributed to the city from cables lying in the lake that connect to other data centers. By hybridizing four programs: a data center, a deep water cooling facility, academia, and a startup office in one Megastructure, I hope to demonstrate the potential of regaining the ownership of the land, lake, and data — and perhaps to challenge our conception of the role, ownership, and potential of those infrastructures in our lives.
