Appropriating Mega Junkspace

“Traffic is Junkspace, from airspace to the underground; the entire highway system is Junkspace, a vast potential utopia clogged by its users, as you noticed when they’ve finally disappeared on vacation.”

- Rem Koolhaas, Junkspace (2002)

In his 2002 essay titled ‘Junkspace’, Rem Koolhaas described Junkspace as the eventual product of modernization. Its nature is that it pretends to unite, but actually splinters people, places, and experiences. For Koolhaas, Junkspace is a micro space – invisible plenum space between mechanical equipments. The advance of ICT – Information and Communication Technology, has allowed everybody to witness the city through a different platform – Google Maps & Street View, providing everybody the view of Junkspace in a macro scale – Mega Junkspace. This thesis attempts to reclaim and appropriate the Mega Junkspace underneath the Gardiner Expressway through Desiring-Production, creating an Assemblage (Deleuze & Guattari).
