Future Natures

Canada is known for its natural, awe-inspiring landscapes. These landscapes are best reflected in Canada’s National Park system, which protects them for the enjoyment of current and future generations. Canada’s nature is also intensely developed through resource extraction, presenting dilemmas as land-use conflicts with protection mandates. Recently established, Rouge National Urban Park, Canada’s first National Urban Park, with its combination of natural and productive landscapes, presents a new opportunity for Canada’s park system. The goal of this thesis is to create a framework that dynamically balances preservation, conservation, and resource development to create multi-layered landscapes that respond to the opposing views of what to do with Canada’s nature.
