From Ash: Reclaiming Coal Ash Deposit Sites

From Ash develops an effective system using landscape strategies for the remediation and redevelopment of decommissioned coal-fired power plants. As energy policy and technology shifts, coal-fired power plants are quickly being decommissioned, leaving landscapes and neighboring communities which are economically and environmentally degraded. These coal-fired power plants are typically situated along rivers in ecologically sensitive areas and leave large coal-ash deposit sites. This thesis proposes that, in addition to cleaning up the industrial waste and contaminants present in the coal ash deposits, there is a potential for these sites to be redeveloped for social, economic, and ecologic productivity.
