Regeneration of “Lost Spaces” Near Urban Rail Corridors in Toronto

In Toronto, post-war macroeconomic dynamics caused many previously functioning industrial complexes built along the railway corridors to fall into disrepair. These are “Lost Spaces” that now feature abandoned or underutilized and vacant properties. This thesis proposes sustainable design and development to transform these “Lost Spaces” into habitable communities near the railway. It will utilize a variety of innovative public realm elements and propose a range of mixed-use programs to increase urban resilience and extend the emerging active green railway corridor in Toronto’s Bloor/Dundas West area.
